The Euro'pen Cup 2008, held on the picturesque waters of the Lac d'Iseo in the North of Italy, was the last major event of the European O'pen BIC season. A great turnout of 47 competitors, 33 boys and 14 girls, showed the strength of the Class in Italy and made for plenty of action both on and off the water at the Associazione Nautica Sebia (ANS), the host club for this event.
Exceptional summer weather meant for pretty light winds during the entire 3 days of the competition. However, this didn't prevent 8 races from being completed, with a strong emphasis on the speed and O'pen Cross courses - including compulsory freestyle manoeuvres. These freestyle manoeuvres, for example compulsory capsizes or 360° turns, were completed with sometimes surprising agility by the competitors... some of who were just 7 years old!
O'pen BIC events are not only just fun on the water, but also on the land! On Saturday the Italian Class Association and ANS organised for all participants a full evening of events that started with a good Italian meal, and finished with games and music.
Congratulations go to all competitors for their enthusiasm and O'pen BIC spirit. Special mention should also be made to the winners of each category, who sailed very consistently throughout the whole event to win their respective categories :
U12 girls : Porro Margherita from ANS
U12 boys : Conte Luca from Circolo Velico Elbano
O'pen girls : Ingrid Peric from YC Cupa
O'pen boys : Chincoli Davide also from ANS
Many thanks also go to ANS for their impressive and efficient organisation of the 2008 Euro'pen Cup. With the high level of participation from Italian competitors, next year's Italian O'pen Cup series will prove to be a strongly contested event in Junior sailing!
The O'pen BIC.... for Energized Sailing !
