Bateau Bleu prize for O'pen Bic, December 2007

The prize of the Bateau Bleu was awarded to the O'pen Bic during a ceremony held at the 47th Paris Boat Show, on 1st December 2007.

This prize is awarded by the Fédération des Industries Nautiques in conjunction with ADEME (the Agency for Environment and Energy Management) to encourage research and development of innovative technologies aimed at protecting the maritime environment. More than 20 projects were submitted to this Commission and the 2007 Bateau Bleu competition was based on the ecological aspects of a boat's design and equipments.

During this ceremony, the Minister for Ecology and Sustainable Development, Mr Borloo, handed the prize to Mr Verneuil, Chief Executive of Bic Sport.

The O'pen Bic stood out at different levels:

Design and production: A unique procedure low in energy consumption (short production cycle, low electricity consumption) : rejection rage < 2.5/1000 systematically recycled back, little pollution (closed circuit cooling of the moulds, no gas emissions, no solvents).

Period of use: Development of dinghy sailing with kids and teenagers, centred around communicating and making young sailors aware of the boat's environmental attributes.

Life-cycle: the boat's materials are potentially recyclable (polyethylene, wood and polyethylene foam).
